Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya has hired the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN) to develop satellite data utilization. Through this partnership, ITS and LAPAN are developing satellite for environmental monitoring and maritime, especially in the development of Automatic Identification System (AIS).

Director of Innovation, Cooperation, and Kealumnian ITS, Dr. Eng Kriyo Sambodho ST MEng explains, this cooperation is very beneficial for the Center of Science and Technology of Ship Safety (PUI KEKAL) ITS. The reason, they can easily utilize LAPAN's AIS data to detect the presence of large ships against the sea pipes.

Furthermore, he explains, basically any large vessel with a size of more than 300 gross tonnage (GT) must be completed by AIS data. This is to facilitate the ship owner in monitoring the location of his ship.

However, the existing deficiencies in the AIS data are not yet supplemented with sea plumbing data. While the data is very important, because if the presence of the ship adjacent to the sea pipe it will be very dangerous. This is what will be concerned about working with ITS LAPAN.

"When the ship stopped near the sea pipe, there was an indication to throw the anchor. This action will affect the pipe leaks that could lead to explosions and fires as happened in Balikpapan Bay yesterday, "he said explaining the risks that could happen.

Therefore, continued lecturer who is often called Dodhot this, PUI KEKAL ITS trying to make a new innovation. "If the AIS ITS data is successfully developed, it will be easier for ships to avoid sea pipes, and reduce the risk of accidents and pollution of such environments," explained the lecturer of Marine Engineering.

In addition, added Dodhot, the data utilization conditions for the location of these ships and sea pipes is limited in Singapore, Madura Strait, Jakarta, Sulawesi and Kalimantan. For other areas still use radio wave data. "The hope with this satellite data can all cover everything," he concluded.

Just to note, ITS together with LAPAN has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) about the development of this satellite cooperation in the office LAPAN in Bogor, in early April. (ist/zainuddin).
